Frequently Asked Questions & How It Works

Quick answers on the GST 2.0 slabs, reverse GST, and when to charge IGST instead of CGST + SGST.

What are the GST rates in India now?

Since 22 September 2025 (GST 2.0), most goods and services fall into two slabs: 5% and 18%. A 40% rate applies to a short list of luxury and demerit goods, such as aerated sugar-added drinks and larger cars. Special rates continue for gold, silver and jewellery (3%) and for rough diamonds and precious stones (0.25%). The old 12% and 28% slabs were removed.

How do I remove GST from a GST-inclusive price?

Divide the inclusive price by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to get the taxable value; the rest is GST. For ₹11,800 at 18%: 11,800 ÷ 1.18 = ₹10,000 taxable value and ₹1,800 GST. Shortcut: GST = inclusive price × rate ÷ (100 + rate).

When do I charge CGST + SGST, and when IGST?

If the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state or union territory, charge CGST + SGST (or UTGST), each at half the rate. If they are in different states, charge IGST at the full rate. A Patna seller billing a Patna buyer at 18% charges 9% CGST + 9% SGST; billing a Kolkata buyer, 18% IGST.

Is GST on a restaurant bill 5% or 18%?

Standalone restaurants charge 5% without input tax credit. Restaurants inside hotels where a room is priced above ₹7,500 per day charge 18% with input tax credit. Hotel rooms up to ₹7,500 per day are taxed at 5% without input tax credit, and rooms above that at 18%.

Can I still calculate GST at 12% or 28%?

Yes. Type any rate into the Custom field. Supplies made before 22 September 2025 were taxed at the rates in force then, so revisions or credit notes for those invoices may still need 12% or 28%.

Does this calculator include compensation cess?

No. It works out GST only. Compensation cess no longer applies to most goods, but where a cess or other levy still applies, add it separately. Rates follow the HSN or SAC code, not the product name, so confirm the code against the CBIC rate notifications before you invoice.
